Planting around patio

We have recently bought a townhouse in Wailea Maui and I would like to improve the platings around the patio. I am from Canada so I am somewhat perplexed. We will be away a lot but we do have sprinklers. It is shade in the am and sun in the pm. I would really like a striking foliage design - not too high - any suggestions for plant material?

how about crotons? beautiful colored leaves year-round, easy to grow.

Thank you so much for your response. I would prefer that the planting would not grow much over 4 feet tall. I see there are dwarf crotons but I do not know if they are easily available. I had also considered green spider lily. Do you think these would work?
