Looking for achiote tree...

We have been trying to find a place to purchase an achiote (annatto-achuete) tree. We had the red one at our old house, but didn't have time to make new potted plants. We would like the red or yellow one. Surely would appreciate any info! Mahalo!

Aloha,

Which island are you on? I think they had some for sale at Garden Exchange in Hilo several weeks ago.

Don't they also call them "lipstick" trees? There used to be one near where we parked our car when we lived in Kaiaakea Camp, but we don't live there anymore or I would air layer a seedling for you. Can you go back to your old house and air layer? Or just cut a branch and see if it will grow when stuck in the ground? That works an amazing amount of the time, especially if you dip it in root tone first.

A hui hou,
Cathy

You are right, hotzcatz – they are also called lipstick trees.
Do either of you have the botanic name or know of where a picture is for the yellow annatto? Can it be started from seed, or is it some kind of hybrid? Thanks for any info.

Aloha,

There is a fellow over near Keeau who is selling some of the red ones. He has a webpage and sells plants from there as well as to Garden Exchange and at the semi-annual plant sales. I'll put a link to his webpage for you.

A hui hou,
Cathy

Thanks, johndp8888 - I thought I would not get an answer. I will contact the above nursery - I know where they are & see if they have any of the yellow or green variety. The red is pretty easy to start from seed.
If anyone knows of any other sources for the yellow or green variety, I would much appreciate the information.

Thanks

The yellow one can be started just as easily from seed. I think it is the same species, just a different color form. We have both colors in the ground. The red is much prettier, in my opinion, and the pods make a good cut flower for the holiday season.
