small shade tree for arid mountain climate

Aloha! We have a big blank space to garden and I'm looking for a nice smallish shade tree to plant in front of our house. I don't want tons of rubbish, if possible. We live pretty high up in Makakilo so arid mountain climate. I'd love to plant native species if possible. Thanks for your insight!

Hi,

There is a good website that shows the native trees and other plants for various parts of Oahu. Go to http://www.hbws.org/cssweb/display.cfm?sid=1155, then click on the Oahu Planting Guide. The map will show the various planting areas on Oahu.

Plants can be purchased from Home Depot or from the native nursury in Kaneohe.

A Maua plant koaia,or an a'alii might be spectacular for your area. If you have difficulties e mail me at johndp8888@aol.com.
