Hi Everyone!
I want to start a vegetable garden in Kihei, in Maui Meadows, which is a dry and hot climate. What vegetables would be good to try? Any successes out there with veggies in Kihei or similar climates? Thanks so much!!

Okra, long bean, eggplant, wing bean, cowpeas, lima beans, malabar spinach, basil, lemongrass, chile peppers, cherry tomatoes, swiss chard, edible amaranth. In the 'not summer' months you can probably grow other things-bok choy, lettuce, snap peas, green beans. With a little bit of shade you might even be able to grow some of the things in the second list now.
There's a group in Kihei-South Maui Sustainability maybe? I think they have some backyard gardeners. You might want to compare notes.
You might also want to contact the County Extention offices and sign up for one of their fruit fly classes. Fruit flies are the main reason you might not be able to grow full sized tomatoes, melon, squash or sweet peppers. Good Luck!
