Green Mulch, nitrgen fixers and living fences

Posted by reverend_bigisland (My Page) on

I am looking for info on nitrogen fixers and living fences for Puna Big Island. Specificaly Gliricidia Sepium. Has anyone tested this plant in Hawaii? Is it invasive?

Any suggestions on plants in these areas will be welcome.

Mahalo!

Not invasive at all. As far as I know, it doesn't seed in Hawaii and must be grown from cuttings. Fairly popular in permaculrure and agroforestry. Cut it back and use the green leaves and branch tips as mulch.

When you plant the cuttings, plant them deep in the ground so that they have support. They need it later.

Sometimes called Madre de Cacao from it's use as an overstory companion to coffee.

you're on the big island? Craig Elevitch is based over there and has done a lot of work in the area you are asking about. check out the link for lots of resources.

Here is a link that might be useful: Agroforestry.net
