suggestion for accompanying potted podocarpus

hello!

we're planning to plant podocarpus trees in wine barrels & i'd very much appreciate any suggestion for accompanying plant to go in the same barrel.

i'd prefer a fragrant, tropical plant similar to pikake or stephanotis, but smaller since i need the plant to creep(?) around the barrel & wouldn't outgrow it in a couple of years.

i thought about dwarf ylang-ylang, but is this still going to get too big?

any suggestions pls? i have no clue about planting & would very much appreciate hearing from the experts.

thank you.

pikake is a tree. So is ylang ylang. Both would be to large.
Stephanotis is a vine and should work very well. It could be easily kept trimmed after it develops and it has a nice smell.

blooms in late winter and spring in Hawaii. Star jasmine, "Trachelospermum" Would be another choice. It blooms in spring and early summer. You could plant both to extend the blooming season. They are both white, could blend together and both have a sweet smell. Stephanotis is a stronger oder.

good luck

Aloha Maiolo,
I have stephanotis vine that is covering my chainlink fence and it is still blooming. I live on Oahu, in Kaaawa.
I feed it with Miracle-grow sporatically. I just spray it on with a spray bottle. Seems to really give it a boost. There is a vining ylang ylang also.
