Are there restrictions on plants from the mainland?

Hi, we're hoping to move to Puna soon and we would like to plant a garden with a wide variety of tropical and sub-tropical plants. I believe we may need to order some of them from mainland nurseries (like Logee's) and I'm wondering if there is any official problem with bringing in plant material from a nursery?

Also can you recommend Hawaiian nurseries with a wide range of ornamental & fruiting plants.

Thanks a lot - mahalo

Lucky you-lots of great plant growers on the big island! Check out Plant It for a good selection of fruit trees. Frankies on Oahu has some hard to find ornamentals. If I were you, tho', I'd check out the Hilo swap meet and talk to some of the growers there before I started importing things. As far as bringing something in from Logees-I'd suggest contacting them directly for their policy. Not all nurseries ship here. Do be careful-we've seen big problems with hitchhiking pests that have caused significant damage.

I live in Puna. There are many nurseries here, many specialists. Rosettes in HPP is a large retailer with many ornamentals, farmers markets and yard sales often have the most exotic. I looked at Logee's homepage, I have 9 out of 10 of their "most popular" in my yard already. Once you get to know your neighbors, many of your plants will be free.

Don't waste your time and money you can get plants here that will grow here, and I think the cost is less. In fact most don't cost anything but time. You can get cuttings ever where and starting is easy " STICK IN THE GROUND". GO TO "PLANT IT HAWAII INC.". THEY HAVE A SELL 2 TIMES A YEAR.

Plant It Hawaii's next sale is November 1st. Here's their website so you can see the range of plants they carry: http://www.plantithawaii.com/

There is also a nice grower in Hawaiian Acres, he has sales listed in the newspaper occasionally as well as a website: http://www.rpetropicals.com/ That's Royal Palm Enterprises.

Rosette's is in HPP and there's always Garden Exchange in Hilo town. There's loads of plants here, no need to bring any in. Also the plants already here have been acclimatized to our weather zone.

Way out in the Pacific, maybe the Island also imports trees from Australia.

Maybe some of the arborists at www.treeworld.info would know if there are Australian nurseries shipping to various Islands.

"Sorry no shipments to Hawaii or Puerto Rico" is common in catalogs. While it is true there are lots of kinds of plants available within Hawaii already there are also plenty of interesting things that would seem to have potential that appear to be absent from gardens and nurseries there. Probably best to familiarize yourself with what is already available there first and then look into what you may be allowed to bring in later, and what you may have to do to get it there.
