Identify Kauai Plant & Pest (Photo)

Greetings,

North of Kapa'a, near the 11-mile marker, there is a place that used to be a nude beach called Donkey Beach. Apparently it's been purchased and the new owners don't like naked people, but there is still beach access. You walk perhaps half a mile from the road to the shoreline, and along the way, the path is bordered by these brilliantly-coloured 6-8 foot hedges. The holes in the leaves make them even more interesting, but I'm assuming it's some kind of pest problem. I'd be grateful to know what the plants are, and also what's eating them.

Thanks,
Michele

variegated hau, Hawaii state flower. It has yellow blooms in the morning turning to dull red in the evening. A form of Hibiscus.

The holes in the leaves are caused by Chinese Beetles. They come out a night. You might be able to see them and pick them off early in the morning. I control them with Neem Oil. Sevin or almost any pesticide will kill them. Spray Once a week. They are not usually a pest when we have plenty of rain.

The holes in the leaves are caused by chinese rose beetles,
Adoretus sinicus (burmeister).
