| What length of time do your long beans produce for?
i have been pulling mine out after the first picking slows down but i have just heard that they might continue to push beans out after that.
i had some bush beans that i left in for about 6 months just to see what would happen. They continued to produce small yields at regular intervals although not nearly as prolifically as the first harvest. And the wing beans just keep on going. I have a book called 'Growing vegetables in Fiji' that says they will keep producing for up to 4 years!
Just wondering if long beans behave in the same way. |

| I tried growing long bean before, but unfortunately they were not productive and I have to get rid of it because of a white powdery mildew. I was wondering, how long did your wing bean take before it bears any pods at all? My wing beans has bean growing for more than two months and still is not bearing any pods. I don't know what type of wing bean it is, I got the seed from Oahu Urban Garden when I was with the tour guide who tossed me the dry pods. |

| Yes, the powdery mildew was horrible on the long beans and the cowpeas which are in the same family. i was happy to get a few pretty good pickings in before i pulled the plants out. i don't keep very good records but i am going to guess 3 or 4 months before the wing beans began to produce pods. Seems like i planted them in January. For awhile they only flowered, no beans. i remember complaining about that around Easter time. The flowers are a pretty shade of blue and have a pleasant sweet taste so were a welcome addition to spring salads. Pods came not too long after my complaining-May perhaps? They do not seem to enjoy the trade winds very much and may produce better with a sheltered location. That urban garden center sounds like a pretty cool place. |

| tradewind location should be fine. Only times winds troubles beans is it's too windy or salt exposure to ocean breezes. Beans might look it but they requires alot of preplant nutrition. Elevation plays apart too. The higher the elevation the slower the pod production. |

| How do you plant long beans from seeds? I tried planting my seeds but the seeds rots and don't grow at all. I'm guessing that the seeds I bought was old. So I bought another package of long beans seeds, it did the same thing. Please help me. Mahalo. |

| If you have patience, you can test some of the seeds if they are still viable and if they do, plant them in a sterile potting soil and then transfer the seedlings to your desired location. When I plant, I don't test seeds personally--don't have much patient for it. Do you plant the seed directly into your garden soil? I almost never plant vegetable seedlings directly to the soil, it usually is being eaten by critters before the leaves even fully forms. |

| Gardengirl i didn''t have any trouble at all, just planted the beans right in the ground and watched them grow! Does your soil drain well? Where did you get your seeds from? i think it is important to start with fresh seeds. i usually mail order mine and store them in the refrigerator. These are some good mail order sources: www.evergreenseeds.com (Evergreen Seeds) www.superseeds.com (Pinetree Seed Co.) www.rareseeds.com (Baker's Creek Seed Catalog) www.johnnysseeds.com (Johnny's) www.kitazawaseed.com (Kitazawa's) If you are lucky enough to have a neighbor growing long beans see if they might be willing to share some seeds with you, that would really be the best source! There are bush varieties available as well. |

| Thank you Randg and Mauirose for your reply/advise. I tried to plant seedlings indoors in soil and just the right amount of moisture. Yes soil drains. Everything grew except the Long beans seeds. I got the seeds from Walmart local brand with a hawaiian name. ( I don't remember). I will try your suggestions. |
