Iris Possible On Big Island?

Is it possible to grow iris on the Big Island of Hawaii? Maybe in Kamuela or the village of Volcano where it is just a tad cooler?

Internet says they won't grow in the state of Hawaii. But we all know that what "everybody knows" is sometimes wrong.

You could always try Walking Iris, Neomarica gracilis.

If you google Iris in Hawaii you will get considerable info on this subject. see http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/iris/msg111628084584.html

I have a couple kinds of iris at 1500 ft elevation, including walking and a pretty blue one that I got from a friend in Hilo. Don't think I've ever seen the big iris here.
