Papaya stumps (removal)

| I know, it seems like a crime to cut down a papaya tree, but a couple of mine are sick and scrawny -- not to mention, planted in awkward places -- sprouted from birds or strewn seeds (and have been pushing against my lanai).
So, I need to get rid of them and plant some new ones. Any suggestions? I found that they are very easy to cut down (I have trimmed one already -- a favorite one -- and it is sprouting new bushy branches low enough for me to pick the fruit).
I just need some ideas about removing the stump and roots -- will they just rot naturally? ... or will I have more bonsai papaya plants rising from the stump forever?? |

| They will rot naturally very quickly, 6 months to a year depending on moisture level, just don't let any of the sprouts grow. A few good swings of the wide end of a pick will help get it below the soil surface and open it to quicker decomposition. ilima |
