Powdery Mildew

ediblelandscape

When I first started gardening in Nanakuli 4 years ago, I noticed when beans, tomatos, and peppers started to bear, the leaves began to yellow, with a powdery substance underneath the leaves. Quickly after that the plant withers and dies. At first I thought this was nematodes, or rust, but I now know it is powdery mildew, the worst disease of farms around the world. I recently met a farmer from Eva that grows 60 acres of sweet basil. He said powdery mildew is his biggest problem. They use expensive chemical sprays, and the mildew keeps adapting to the chemicals so they have to use a new one often. Unfortunately, there are few vegetables resistant to powdery mildew, and the homemade spray I have been using, a mixture of baking soda, oil, detergent, is not very effective. I don't expect anyone to have an answer to this problem, but I am putting this information out for those who wonder why their vegetables die just after the first bearing.
