| Aloha, I'm new to growing tropical fruit trees and am looking into purchasing a lot in the puna area of Hawaii. I would like to grow everything, I know that's not possible but am looking for some direction for staples like avocado, breadfruit, Mac nuts, durian and others. This is a moderate to heavy rainfall area and my question is how much water is too much. I have looked at some lots and while they are not in a stream they are next to one. Moisture content is high but there are no ponds or puddles on the surface, that are visible anyway. I plan on thoroughly looking at the land before I buy it so I'm looking for some advice on what to look for or to avoid.

| Puna includes a lot of area, from sealevel to nearly 4000 feet; some areas are dryish, others soggy. Its all on lava, which cracks and provides good drainage in most areas. Most puddles occur in the middle of roads. I would avoid obvious stream and meadow areas (no trees generally mean trees don't grow well there). You need to figure out the requirements of the plants you want, then match the area to those needs. |
