Actually grass is very active in growth right now. Personally i never had much success starting lawns with seeds. With our periodic downpours that wash away seeds, to the contant attacks from marauding birds, its too much work.

thanks for the reply. Yeah I would like to plugs or do hydroseed but the difference in price is huge. For seeds it's around $120, using plugs or hydroseed is around $2500. It's the same amount of prep-work in terms of getting the ground ready, but the seeding part means keeping the ground moist for several weeks, fighting birds, and hoping there's no huge rains for a while.

I think the risk is worth trying to save $2300 or so!

Did you try contacting the golf courses? Sometimes they verti- cut the greens and will give away the cuttings or sell them for a good deal. Its worth a try!

We usually start planting our gardens around now and continue for the next several months. The rains will be starting and the days will be cooler so the plants can get a good start.

Other than by seed, I've had good grass starts from getting varieties of grasses growing nearby and transplanting them. There are a whole lot of different types of grasses out there, more than just the types they sell seeds for.

If your neighbors have some nice grasses growing up around some of their shrubs, you could offer to "weed" around the shrubs if you could keep the grass starts.

Wow- that sure IS a huge savings. :) If you mulch lightly over your seeds, that should help keep birds from eating all the seeds. For that large a sum, you could even grow your own grass plugs in potting soil in seedling flats, and have at least $1800 left over.
