Several homes in my neighborhood have beautiful, thick hedges of a type of Hibiscus. I don't know the proper name, but it's the variety that makes lots of bright pink flowers (smaller than regular hibiscus flowers.) This variety grows more like a hedge than a shrub, and quickly reaches heights of 10 foot or more.

I'm not sure how it grows in other parts of Hawaii, but the climate here is hot and dry, similar to Lahaina.

Something with nice smelling blossoms might be nice. Night blooming jasmine? That might be a bit overpowering, though.

How about something with fruit like a surinam cherry or something with bright flowers like a bouginvilla? The bouginvilla also has stickers so burglers would stay away from your windows. It might have to grow up on a trellis, though, to be tall enough for a privacy hedge.

Some heliconias get to ten feet tall and cluster enough for a hedge. Areca palms or bamboo?
