Wind-resistant flowering shrubs/plants?

I live on Kauai and would love recommendations for wind-resistant flowers or flowering shrubs. The area I'm planting gets full sun in the morning, full shade in the afternoon, is good old fashioned Kauai red dirt, and gets the wind gusts straight off the mountains. I'm at about 500 ft altitude, and salt spray isn't an issue. I've got a wind meter, and have measured regular gusts up to 11-15 mph.

Some of the plants I love, and would love to be able to use, include agapanthus, bougainvilla, plumbago, penta, tradascanthia. Can rosemary and lavender take the wind? The area I'm planting is between the driveway and the house, so I don't need things that will get much higher than 3-4 feet, and (obviously!) would love lots of color.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you live in Kalaheo. Most of those plants can handle wind. Really, most plants can handle our trades, as long as its not full of salt (Like kealia, kapaa etc..) The only plants I notice hate wind are ferns (hapuu) bananas, heliconias. They will still grow in windy areas, but they may get a "tattered" look to them. My suggestion is to look around the neighborhood and see what thrives.
Aloha

Yeah, I live in Kalaheo and the ti plants and bananas really get tattered by the wind, but I'm still learning, too.

Some of the most interesting plants are Hawaiian native species, these will be adapted to local conditions. Some are also unique to Hawaii, unlike the common garden shrubs and flowers that are the same kinds grown and seen throughout the tropics.
