Greetings. I've grown tomato plants in Honolulu and in Waianae. I've grown them in the ground and in pots. So far, the types were Roma, He'elani, and various unknown cherries that were given to me. At one point, it was like the "Day of the Triffids."
One day, a neighbor of mine in town, set out several medfly traps with hormones as lures. Next thing I know, all my tomatoes were stung...Can't even mention how many maggots I found in the bittermelon. Of course, can't say that it was the medfly lures; however, since that time, unless I covered the tomatoes, I couldn't harvest any. In Waianae, the same tomatoes, minus the medfly lure, were not stung at all and did not need to be covered. Has anyone else had more problems due to lures and traps than results? I wasn't really angry at him. I just pulled all the tomatoes and bittermelon. |

Med fly is a bummer. The only tomatoes I have been able to grow in Kona is Cherry Tomatoes. They seem to be impervious to the med fly. Most of the Tomatoes grown on the Big Island is in Wiamea, A higher elevation and cooler. I have not used a lure. Phil |

we are doing our first raised veggie garden..using tile blocks as a border and are using the landscape plastic cloth thingy to go over the ground and then will add the soil etc. We live in Mountian View, Hawaii(been here 2 yrs and before that over 30yrs on Maui) at I guess 1000+ altitude ( I'm guessing here but I know that a little further up the road the post office is at 1500 level. I want to grow tomatoes and some one told me to use neem oil to keep the bugs from the tomatoes..is this correct? I also heard from this same person that turnip/mustard greens grow great inour area.
