Hillside Gardening

Hints/Plans for Hillside Stairs

I have a steepish hill (lets just say I have a hard time climbing up it without the assistance of some ivy vines...my son can climb it pretty easily, but he is six). I would like to install some simple stone stairs to the top of the hill where it flattens out. This is not a huge hill so it would be maybe 15 steps. Ideas? Books? Websites? Thanks

Railroad ties. The easiest way would be to dig out the soil, put a tie in place, then sledge hammer some 1/2" rebar on both ends into the ground, you might have to drill the holes through. 18" rebar to stabilize the tie.

If you like having the hand holds, you may need more than steps. If there are conveniently located trees, maybe a rope "handrail" could be installed to give you something to grab onto.
