Kalmia latif. 'Nipmuck'

I posted this on the shrubs forum also, but thought I should try here, too. I bought a Kalmia latif. 'Nipmuck' to replace a laurel that suddenly died. When I bought the new one, the person at the nursery mentioned that laurels should be placed on a slope. I had never heard that before, but didn't inquire further as I should have (we went on quickly to something else). Does anyone know why this is? I need to rethink my planned placement if this is good advice. I would hate to lose my new plant because of poor placement, especially when we have a great(?) hillside in the back that needs planting. Thanks, Cynthia
