log bridges

Have a new farm (new to me) that is cut off from itself in several places by swamp, mostly thanks to beaver. To further complicate matters, the swamps are environmentally protected. I want to be able to cross these swamps on horseback, and with a tractor, without damaging the environment. I was thinking of some type of log road that I could then cover with dirt, keeping it natural. Of course money is an issue so forget any fancy solutions. Any ideas out there?

could you build a log bridge over the swamp? it seems like laying something on the ground might anger the beavers. who knows they might try and rip it out. over time your log "road" will most likely rot anyway.

RE: log bridges

We got our bridge plans from the guy at the link below. Really cool, can be made in any size for any type of load. Very adjustable. Ours should be able to take a horse or lawn tractor... but made out of heavier materials with less arch you could easily take a tractor over.

I hear ya... we have tons of wetlands, a ditch, a lake with an island, several connected ponds... and a small river. So already we have two bridges...and we will surely have a couple more before we are done. Someday I would love to have a raised wooden walkway through the wetlands in the woods so I can admire it without plodding through it and damaging it.

I had a link of pictures of bridges another person made of his functional metal farm bridges... but I can't seem to find it now.

Here is a link that might be useful: cool bridge plans
