| I hate to be a wet blanket, but if you are planning on a neat little homestead experience that includes any poultry or livestock, you will fall under the brand new, incredibly draconian regulations of the National Animal Identification Scheme, uh, System. Even if it's only one horse, sheep, goat, cow, pig, llama, alpaca, deer, chicken, goose, or duck, and it's just a pet, if you have any animals other than cats or dogs, this means you. Sorry, but in the interest of "security", the USDA has decided that all non canine and feline animal ownership constitutes an agreement on your part to surrender your right to privacy, as well those same rights of anyone who visits your home.
How intrusive is this program? The still voluntary application for your new, nine digit federal premisis ID number that you can pick up at your local county extension office includes a line for you to give the precise GPS coordinates for every barn, shed and outbuilding on your property, as well as the coordinates for every piece of property on which you keep animals. If you have so many little outbuildings they don't all fit on one line, you're supposed to attach a seperate piece of paper. IOW, if your neighbor lets your kid's horse graze the five acres behind his house so he doesn't have to mow, you have to list him too. Look it up yourself at their website. Now, there are some aspects of this whole system that are obviously going to take a while to implement, but rest assured, this is is the plan. Think of it as your tax dollars (and an unelected, unaccountable bureacracy) at work. In case you'd like to know more, this came through a goat list I'm on; it's "printed as written". Just thought I'd pass it on. "Attention all Goat Owners and Owners of Animals small and large, You are invited to a *special* Goat Chat at www.goatworld.com this

| There is also a lengthy discussion of this important issue on the Farm Life Forum. All I can say is: thank goodness I live in Canada. I suppose they will get to it here eventually, but not (I hope) for a long while. |

| Very true Maggie. I like being nieve and behind the times. Hopefully the program becomes a national embarassment in the US and doesn't come up. Hopefully Harper doesn't do what I'm afraid he may (in case he wins). |

| Hi. I just posted to the farming forum here, but I will repeat the links that are helpful. Thanks, Littledog, for posting about NAIS. One of the biggest obstacles in fighting this 'scheme' (as you so aptly put it:-) is that small, home, or the general non-farming public are in the dark about it. Please visit the links. One of them is a 'real-life' experience of living under NAIS. Thanks for helping us fight to keep our way of life, our privacy and our freedom. http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/SDBookMom/ 'Real-life' experience under law. Check out her link to Homesteading Today for an excellent letter written by a lawyer and executive director for Farming for Life. http://animalid.aphis.usda.gov/nais/newsroom/news_2005-6-21.shtml One of several 'news' items on USDA site http://animalid.aphis.usda.gov/nais/index.shtml NAIS home http://www.in.gov/boah/new/IDruleSummary.htm Indiana’s version-comment at end of summery. www.stopanimalid.org More info here http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/369063795 The petition to sign against it; I don’t have a lot of faith in petitions, but perhaps to will help a little. |
