Where to buy and how much land?

Hello!

I am currently a college student studying organic & sustainable crop production (yes, that's actually a major here!), and do not want to get a job that supports the untenable consumerist economy when I graduate. I've always wanted to move back to the land, and homesteading/permaculture is extremely attractive to me.

Unfortunately for most youngin's like me, land equity is completely skewed, and there is no way for me to accrue any amount of reasonable income to purchase my own land in a timely fashion.

But, to my great appreciation, my parents have put forth a great amount of time and effort to build our family's wealth and prosperity. My mother is looking to diversify our assets by purchasing some land, and I have convinced her that land with utility (i.e., farm land) is far more useful and practical than land in a suburb or city.

So here we are. I have the knowledge of how to grow crops in an organic and sustainable fashion, but not much knowledge on -where- to grow them. I have an understanding of USDA zoning and whatnot, but as far as building an integrated agroecosystem, I'm not sure where the best place to go would be.

I would like to avoid places with polluted water sources (Tennessee, for example) and heavy populations (I prefer isolation to constant company), but also somewhere where land is not overly expensive (around 150-250k range).

I was also wondering how much land would be required to sustain a small family (3-5 people), and also a few animals (e.g., a horse or two, dogs, etc).

So if anyone had any suggestions, that would be great!

Thanks!

We should be going to people like you to answer this kind of question ;)

As refrigeration and transportation improved the vegetable farms all moved out to California, now with fuel being less certain many are moving back East.

There is a book "security (on or from) 5 acres " that should get you started . Remember the farther you are from high populations the father you are from your markets for your products and from hospitals and the other good things of civilization .

Most hobby farms are 10 acres or more .

I am currently looking at land around Kansas City, MO. Interested in starting a small vegetable farm. I am almost 50 and my company is downsizing. I might be able to get a nice severance package. Don't want to die in a cubicle. I grew up on a small dairy farm in South Dakota. This subject is very interesting to me. Small farms are growing at an explosive rate right now. Both for subsistence and (small) profit. The medium size farm is dying out. I think a lot of people will be returning to the land.

I've considered this also, I think size depends on what you want to do w/ it. Garden and chicken for your family 1 acre would be plenty. Horses for work and manuring? Cows for beef or milk? more acreage is going to be necessary and under grass much of the time to keep them fed and happy.

As far as location I think what ever makes you happy. If you can purchase water rights is something very important to consider. If you own the land but some body else owns your rain shed or you can't put in a well...

If you're looking for a great place to live check out western Wisconsin. Vernon county has the highest concentration of organic farmers in the nation. There are a lot of progressive minds in the Viroqua area. Most farmers in that area travel to the twin cities or to Madison to sell their goods.Once a year just to the north is the Midwest renewable energy fair. Its the largest renewable energy fair in N.America with 20,000 attendees. This is the the area that I plan to move to, I own 20 organic acres. Hope to see you there.

Peace,
Little John
