Evaluation pages on insulation/building materials?

I am a science teacher I want to make up a project involving designing a heating/cooling efficient house that is cheap and environmental. I'm looking for a page or books that evaluate the different types of builing materials and cost to heat, build etc. Heck, e-pals for my students might not be bad either, someone they can send questions to.

thanks for your help! I'll let you know how it goes! no matter how exciting a project is, its really hard to motivate these inner city kids (they have already had a house designing project in math....).

Check out the Oak Ridge Nat'l Lab website - I'll try to post a link here if I can find it. They are doing great research on building sciences & heating/cooling, and there are even interactive calculators on their site.

Here is a link that might be useful: ORNL Building Envelopes Program
