hi everyone! hope theres room for another homesteading wanabe. my husband is trucking so that we can get rid of some bills, while the kids and i try to get some money making things going here. i have been talking with my dad about building a straw house, he knows nothing about them, but asked me if the house could be built in the normal way up to the subfloor and then start up with the straw. it would really cut down on the foundation work if it would work. hope i am posting in the right forum.

You might try asking on the Mother Earth News website (www.motherearthnews.com), or on the permaculture link on this site. Good luck, and keep us updated!

I am interested in this too, as I'd like to make some chicken coops and outbuilding from this. Here's a site I found with an inexpensive book on the subject. Hope it helps.

Here is a link for some info. Also do a search on eBay for Straw House and I found a guy that I think has excellent info for sale. I have not got it yet, but will before I build. I have a book already on "Straw Bale Building", but I want to accumulate more detailed info. I'm currently in the process of becoming a building inspector in my state, and will soon know what my challenges will be for getting plans approved.

We have neighbors who built a straw bale house several years ago with the help of some friends. It is a two story structure with a basement, stucco outside and in. They love it very much. They put a red metal roof on it...it looks very quaint and fits in nicely in the surrounding rural area we live in. The frame is I believe post and beam. It's cool in summer and warm in winter. Good Luck with your project!

I am also looking into this. I am going to first build a wall or fence of it around my goldfish pond to see if it is something that I would be able to do. If I like it then the sky is the limit at $2.50 a bale!!
