permaculture questions

i'm worried that if i used some machinery like a horse-drawn mower, or a mechanical corn husker, it could break down and there'd be no one around that knows how to fix it. likewise with vital electric appliances such as refrigerator, lights, and battery charger. sure you can call someone now who would be willing to travel over 50 miles to do repair service. but that might not always be the case. i can't imagine having nothing to use but simple hand tools that take forever to finish things.

i also wonder about non-essential appliances that i hold very dear, like the vacuum cleaner, the dishwasher, and washing machine. is it feasable to have such energy+water hogs in an off-the-grid lifestyle?
