Gardening in towers

Has anyone tried the "new" form for gardening, stackable pots and you water through the top? These are becoming popular in Florida, and though I'm not eager to spend the bucks for a system, I'm terribly curious. Can you grow long-rooted things in these? Are they successful only with the "special" soil? I'm pretty lazy so they idea of standing to harvest a garden is pretty appealing.

RE: Gardening in towers

Are they pots stacked with normal soil or are you talking about the hydroponic towers?
Also, you could build a raised bed on legs if you wanted to garden at normal standing height. I've thought about making a tall one with plywood on the bottom so I could stand and garden.
