I am currently living off the grid & use an outhouse. At the rate we're going, we'll have to dig another hole in a matter of months. Is there any way to put something down the outhouse hole to help the matter decompose faster? I've heard of adding sauerkraut to septic tanks to jump start the decomposition process. Would this work in an outhouse? Or anything else for that matter?
Thanks,
Sonja
P.S. I've just read that lime does not in fact help decomposition, but in fact severely hinders it.
If you've been using the outhouse for awhile there's plenty of bacteria.....a starter won't make a difference...you may want to consider composting worms (Eisenia Foetida)... Lime is used to control odor, but can kill the bacteria...
