House Swapping for Vacations and more

I've only read about this idea where people live in someone else's house and vice versa usually for a vacation period. It seems to be more popular with people abroad. We recently had a firefighter family from England wanting to swap houses with another firefighter here for a 6 month period. It was a legal, allowable venture on both municipalities. I would have gone for it, however, there wasn't enough time to work out school details, among other issues. Has anyone ever done this sort of thing, house swapping, that is?

This may be of interest - it's the only "accommodation swapping" site I've come across, altho I'm sure there are more. Scroll down to see "Accommodations Offered" and "Accommodations Wanted" links.

Here is a link that might be useful: http://www.lets-linkup.com/

Interesting, but how is this related to homesteading? I don't know any homesteaders who take vacations.B.

This sounds like a neat idea. If only my husband & I could both get off work, no garden worries, no kids in school, etc. We do have a log cabin on the property that we've thought about doing something like this with.

I think most House Swapping goes on in Vacation Areas such as Palm Springs, Florida, Hawaii and the like. I am not sure you will find someone who wants to swap (and work) a Homestead, but who knows, they have Dude Ranches. Good Luck, as for me I will look into Hawaii. Devil Dog

Relates to homesteading in that it uses the great idea of swapping resources and bartering time for time in other places. I'm not looking to set up a swap but I was interested in hearing if any frugal people, with animal properties especially, have ever bartered for time away with others of like mind.

I love the idea. I have a place in Miami FL and I am looking for a place in Cleveland OH next week and France next summer. Anybody interested?

House swapping can be a great way to get to know another community. We swapped our house in Seattle twice - once with a couple in Vancouver, Canada for a long weekend and once with houseboat owners near Paris for three weeks. We found the swaps through an online listing called homelink.com.

I've done it; it's great. We exchanged with a fmaily in Europe. Not paying for a hotel or a car, my family could afford several weeks in Europe. We took care of our exchange partners animals, they took care of ours, we ate from tehir garden, they ate from ours. And we really got to know the area--not just the touristy places.
