Potato Storage

| A product called 'AppleGate NoSprout' was available in a basically unlabeled plastic bottle (3 oz's or so) from a drug store in Batesville, Arkansas about 30 years ago. You mixed with one gallon of water in which you soaked burlap sacks, and then let drip dry before filling with spuds and tying the top. I tried this and stored in a dark basement where I had previous problems with sprouting after a few months. The potatoes never developed one sprout and remained firm until I finally disposed of after a new crop was available the following year. I reused the bags the next year with similar results. The store had quit selling when someone checked back... I assume it was one of the commercially used chemicals and a regulatory thing. Several of us used without problems while available. Thought some may find this interesting. |

Hm...interesting, about 50 years ago in Switzerland we used a powder and dusted the top only in boxes, not sure what it was, it worked good, is there still something like this? I'm building a root cellar soon, hopefully the potatoes should last better, even without this powder,..or your Apple Gate? Konrad |
