What do you recommend?

And do they really work?

RE: Counter top water filtration?

I lived in a real old apartment with galvanized pipes and pretty nasty tasting water. Used one of these for the 3 years I was there and the water was as good as bottled.

I had a countertop model from Sunbeam about 9 years ago. The water was good, but there were some design flaws with the machine and it leaked on the counter quite often.

I had a faucet mount filter, I think a PUR, after that. It also did a good job. Now I have one in my fridge.
