Homesteading... please explain meaning

I read some of the messages and they are all very interesting, but I'm still not sure I understand what homesteading means. Does it mean owning some property which may or may not include a house? In my city, you must claim a 'homesteading' exemption for the lower tax rate, that is, that it's the home you live in, not a second property you may also own. In this forum, does it refer to buying rural acreage for farming and/or ranching purposes? I hate to sound so dumb, but I would like to become educated about this. Thank you. P.S. I also dream of owning at least two acres, where i can raise veggies, and some chickens. I live in the city, and have managed to raise a few chickens, but of course, to the specifications and restrictions of zoning laws. It would be great to be able to allow my chickens to run loose, but they have to be penned up, as per municipal laws.

What you say you dream of is precisely what homesteading is as far as most of us on this forum are concerned. I also like to visit the Farm Life forum, the Permaculture forum and many other forums on this site. They all have a different emphasis. Permaculture is more about efficient use of the site and ecological concerns. Farm life is more about making a living by farming, and the concerns of small farmers. Sustaining Our Environment gets more into global concerns like global warming, widespread use of pesticides, etc. Soils, Mulch, and Composting is one of my favorites because it is a easy practice to implement whereever you are. There are also a large number of crafts forums. Explore and read the FAQ's and you will get a free education. Good luck and come visit often. -- Marie

We have 2 acres in the country, have a garden that I preserve, fruit trees and bushes and chickens and cats. I flower farm while my husband works in the engineering field.

Homesteading is an attitude of self-suffiency. The desire to do it on your own.
