I need information on hardwood mulchs - is it a problem with hostas, I say something somewhere that led me to believe it could be a problem with hostas, I keep it pulled away from base of plants, I do mix in in with the soil in the planting hole.

Shouldn't be a problem--especially if it's a kind that can break down easily. If you have a problem with slugs, they can easily hide
under bigger chunks but otherwise, it shouldn't hurt your hosta!!

BTW--welcome to the Forum, 'jhk'!! You might also find you get more results to your thread on the 'Discussion' Side of this forum.
This side, is usually designated for anything, other than hosta--but we've been known to discuss hosta as well! :o)

If you are buying it prebagged or in bulk from a garden center you should be fine. The only thing you have to watch out for is if you get it free from one of the tree triming companies. Their trimings can have walnut trees in them and they are harmful to hostas and other plants.
