Acidanthera. Also called Peacock lily I think. Very fragrant, blooms from corms planted in the spring. Tender (needs to be dug up and stored). Blooms early fall. Needs sun. I love them.

Oh, that is so beautiful!!! Dig it up, Alexa and make sure you get more of them!! It sounds like the "bulb-elf" must have stopped by your place like he did at mine with the tulips popping up in a circle around the "Strip Tease" I have had
planted for two summers--this summer being the third!! I hope he returns to my place with one of those you have, next Spring!!!

We used to grow those Peacock lilies in Fla. and down there they grow like weeds. They're so prolific that you can't hardly get rid of them once you've got 'em! If one bulb is left,they will return again.

they are actually called 'peacock orchid' and they are closly related to the glad, they originate from Ethiopia,
they say if you are in zone 6 north they need to be dug up and stored, they have all kind of info on it, for digging it up and storing it (I had to look it up, to make sure I was right on the Orchid part, and found all kinds of info!)
I didn't think it was something I could grow 'cause of the orchid part, but that is a bulb I am going to look into next spring!

Yes there are orchids that grow in dirt = they are called terrestrial and there are also orchids hardy to zone 5, I think they are slipper orchids?

Yes I remember those growing as a wild flower when I was a child living in Maine.

So a Peacock Orchid.... well cool! I have no idea where it came from, I guess a squirrel moved it here from a neighbors yard. I will definitely look for more to plant though, it is a cool looking flower!
