Toilet Tales of Woe

As would be expected, things in a 100 year old house wear out over time. Over the past month we noticed a wet spot appearing on the rug at the side of the toilet. Always the same spot, but intermittent when it shows up. Clear like water, doesnt smell like urine, we all argued about it, but my mother decides its not someone missing and not the cat, it must be the toilet leaking somehow (but each time she launders the rug to be sure). So, my mother asked my brother to look at it. He stopped over, looked at it, didnÂt see how it could be a leak, but took off the toilet, pulled up that portion of the tile floor to see what was going on. Of course the answer is "nothing". A week later, my nephew retiles the floor, the next day my brother put down a new wax ring, all new connections, escutcheons, and all new guts for the toilet tank and reinstalled it.

Sigh, another money pit emergency averted! But no, it seems that the guts for the toilet donÂt really fit right, so my brother gets another brand, hmm, that one doesnÂt stop the constant water running problem either, so in total he buys 5 different tank kits, none of them work, so the problem still exists. Last resort we have a plumber come in. He said itÂs a 25 year old Sears toilet, unfortunately Sears doesnÂt make toilets any longer and they donÂt make replacement parts to support existing products.

The plumber offered to buy and install a new toilet for $500. My thought was fine get it done, IÂll pay for it and problem solved. But no, I get a phone call at work from my agitated mother. "I want you to go to Home Depot tonight to buy a new toilet, then your brother will come and put it in on Saturday, youÂre not spending $500 on a toilet." Okay, so to make a long story short I asked my brother, because he owns a van, to take me and our sister to HD. So, we looked at the toilets and I picked out a nice toilet, but the sister says, "no, its too small". I was confused, looking at the toilets they are all basically the same size, but okay we go to LoweÂs. The sister picks out this really nice toilet. DonÂt you know itÂs the same American Standard toilet I had chosen at HD?! I wanted to scream, but just bit my tongue and bought the toilet.

On Saturday my brother installed the new toilet, great! Works like a charm, all is right with the world, yeah! But no, the new toilet (which can handle flushing 6 tennis balls at once) has a smaller water tank, unfortunately when my dad wallpapered the bathroom he didnÂt paper behind the tank, so thereÂs a 3-4 inch swath on either side of the tank of the old plaster. WeÂre very organized, all wallpaper remnants are located in the same closet, but for some reason this paper is missing. Somewhere in the house are the remnants of that papering project, who knows where dad squirreled it away. IsnÂt that always the way it is? I know whatÂs going to happen, IÂm going to have to repaper the bathroom, but not this weekend.

Well, at least the whole problem of the wet rug spot is resolved! But no, the sister walks into the bathroom last night to see the 18 year old cat squatting in the bathroom piddling on the rug in the very same spot. SheÂs on her last legs, she drinks a lot of water, her urine doesnÂt smell. Why every once in awhile she decides to literally walk right past her cat box, in the laundry room, and pee in the bathroom is beyond me. WeÂll just keep the powder room door closed from now on.

So, to sum it up, there was never anything wrong with the toilet in the first place, it was all the sisterÂs cat. Sigh.

upnort, I have to spend a day and look for the paper. There are lots of places it could be. And the cat is fine. She sleeps most of the time and eats. She's happy, comfortable and contented.

pzelko, just found the cat throwing up in the washing machine thread. What a hoot!! We thought about the tank sweating on the floor, but there was no trail of water. Now we have a new toilet, uses less water, so I'm okay with it. Just have to take the old toilet to the recycle center on Saturday. It was a comedy of errors.

And she is using the litter box, we watch her like a hawk now. LOL!

Oh my goodness, Donna! I feel for you, my dear!

Your kitty, might benefit from a visit to the vet--there are medications (injection) to help alleviate
what is going on with her. The problem, is (as explained to me with a 17-yr-old cat we once had)
that the liver is not processing the urine, and she may also be showing evidence of that condition
by being ravenously hungry all the time! That's the other part, she may not be able to assimilate the
    nutritional value of any food.

With the lack of 'nutrition' she may not be 'thinking right', either, and she also may have some
pain associated with urinating, thereby blaming the litter pan (in her thinking) for it, so she goes to
the next area that 'smells' appropriate for doing her business--they have a very high sense of smell,
    you know! :o/

It's part of the 'winding down' of an old pet, I'm afraid! :o( I've no fear that she's not had a good life
    in your household, though!

    Thanks for the info Janice,

Yes, she is winding down. The vet said the shot was $1,300. My sister didn't want to lay out that much money on her 18 year old cat (that's a lot of money!). The vet said all she needed to do instead is feed her, because she would want to eat a lot. So we spend $$ on cat food, she eats like a horse (but is so skinny) and sleeps.

Holy Cow!!!! $1,300? I didn't pay anything NEAR that for our cat, about 20 years ago!!!!
You might want to 'shop around' on that one!! Holy Cow!!!
    Did I mention---Holy Cow????

Janice you forget that I live in the demoncratic Garden State, everything is super expensive here (due IMHO to the a corrupt government). We have shopped around, vets are expensive. My DBF spent $2,300 to have surgery done on his dachshund (different vet even). My company this year is offering pet insurance, which I think is over the edge, but if you were forced to spend big bucks on your pet, who knows. For my less than an acre piece of property and three bedroom house, property taxes are $11,000 a year. I just got an estimate from my dentist to have crowns put on two of my back molars, its $1,400 a piece. A root canal on one tooth three years ago was $1,495, the crown then was $1,000, its gone up $400 in three years! A few years ago we had a macro burst whip through, damaged our property and tree went through the roof (no structural damage). Insurance only covered $1,400 for everything, but we had to have the tree taken down ($2,100) and the roof removed and replaced ($14,000). That's why I drive around in a car that's 8 years old with 100,000. Amazing how anyone can live comfortably here. Is it this way everywhere else in the country?

I think we should re-examine if Canadians pay more tax in order to get health insurance. It sounds like you guys are paying way more than we are one way or another. We have 10 acres, a four bedroom house with separate garage with it's own living quarters, etc. etc. and our taxes are $3000 a year at the most. It sounds like you guys could use a touch of that socialism that is being used to scare people into voting for McCain. I do have to admit that an 8 year old car sounds downright new to me. I drive a 17 year old Jeep and it's the newest, most luxurious car I've ever had!

I send a hug to your cat. I have two that are 17 and keep hoping they'll stay healthy. Beth seemed not to be interested in eating much this summer and is as light as a feather (she always has been). I talked to the vet who suggested getting her tested for failing kidneys or diabitis. The treatment was different for each (one was low protien diet). The cost would be $250 for the test then whatever for the medication. I was going to do it but then she seemed back to her old self. She's eating well, seems to have put on a little weight. I started giving her and Mandy (her cousin also 17) a small spoonful of mayonaise every couple days. This is something my mom always did for a cat with fur balls. Maybe that's what helped? Mandy, meanwhile has become obcessed with her spoonful of mayo and stands and stares at me until she gets it. Thanks for the cat hug McT. She appreciates it I know. Hugs to your sweeties as well. I've seen pics of them that you've posted and they are true beauties!!

Hmmm, the socialism I'm concerned about isn't so much the health care, its the whole distribution of wealth thought behind it. Obama wants change, all the change in my pocket, LOL!! I'm a capitalist, can't appreciate socialism. I don't believe that if I work hard and earn a great and honest living that I should be penalized and forced to share it with someone that is not willing to work hard for themselves. IMHO there's too much entitlement in this country. And big government has proved that they can't run these programs, its all an accident waiting to happen.
