I wonder if the brick would warm up and cause the ground to warm and your plant to grow only to be knocked back by the cold.. I'd just mulch it and be done with it..

I put some buff colored bricks around my hosta last year, and I don't know if it helped
or not, but, none of mine "heaved" even though they were planted in late October!

Single fans in mid October - you bet, brick them. If they were several fans with lots of roots it probably wouldn't be necessary but with sf's I would.

I've heard that it helps to "circle" bricks around mini hostas, the weight and the warmth they absorb are supposed to prevent heaving. But..... I've never tried it, so I can't vouch for it.

And Hijack, thanks for the thumbs up for bricking the daylilies. I got some real bargains! The best was Century Club for $30!! The root systems on all 10 of these are phenomenol, but I'll take your advice and get out the bricks.

If the roots were the fine white feeder roots they would probably hold the sf's in place. If they are the big fat tubers, those will rot before winter sets in and if you don't have enough of the new tubers formed, then they could heave. It is certainly easier to be safe than sorry. If El Nino decides the winter, you might not get enough freeze/thaw to worry about.
