Hash tag?

Since when did someone decide that pound sign,should become hashtag? I worked for the telephone company for 33 years,and it has always been pound sign;in fact it is still on phones today! Why did someone think it needed to change its name? I,for one am getting tired of hearing it on TV all the time! Does anyone out there think about that,or is it just me? Phil

I agree with you. I kept hearing it--has something to do with Twitter--I think. I don't use Twitter, bad enough that I have Facebook.

I still work in communications (nigh on 40 yrs) and it was always an octothorpe (Coined in the 1960s by researchers at Bell Telephone Laboratories).
