Oh my gosh!!!! You call that a SMALL garden! Love the pup. Such fun seeing so many mature Hosta (and you have huge ones) in their full glory. And you have so many that I've not seen before. You have labored long and hard to get where you're at and you've done a divine job. Am looking forward to more-more-more. I want to see that Montana AM planted in it's new home! O) Mary

Oh my, Mary--thank you for your enthusiastic response and nice words!!! I'm so use to what I have, that I'm surprised at how others see it!! :o)

Look at the last pic. and you'll see Montana AM planted--small little thing, right below the blue 'Komodo Dragon' and to the left of 'Liberty'!
It has a ways to go, and I am so impatient to have a really nice sized one!!! Sigh!!!

Thank you, again!!! You made the hard work, well worth the effort!

RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Absolutely gorgeous!! Wow, I can't even imagine having a garden that looks so mature and well done!! I have BIG plans, but always wonder if I will be able to pull off anything close to the beautiful gardens you all post on here!
Thanks for sharing!!

RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Beautiful pics Janice! You know how to design a garden, that's for sure! The 4th picture down, the hosta in the back, with wide dark green edges and chartreuse centers - what is it?

Oh so amazingly beautiful! I adore H. Barney, I could just moosh him! I have 3 hosta poodles here, but they're only allowed in the garden one at a time. You can imagine why.
I really like the'style' of your garden, peaceful, lush and inviting.
In the 8th pic of the garden, not counting Barney, who is the green bordered wavy hosta at the bottom right corner. I have this one, but lost the tag. Was very excited to see it in a pic, lol!

RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Lovely!! I love the wonderful way you blend in other plants that make the hostas shine even more. What a nice place to go on a hot summer day.

Beautiful garden! What is the blue/green hosta in the fourth shot down by the gray pot? Thanks.

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

What an abolutely pretty garden you have Janice! Love Barney too, he looks like he has personality plus. I have a question about one of your hostas as well. The 12th pic (11th after Barney), what is the blue corrugated one, upper right?

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Ditto what everyone else has said. You have done a fabulous job creating a lovely woodland retreat. You can be proud, and thanks for taking time to share the pix. It's an inspiration.

LOL, Phil--you're funny! Wake up--and you two hurry back! You can nap on our 'octo-deck'!hehe

Thank you ALL for your kind comments! I love to be in my garden and wish I could have you ALL,
over--maybe a couple of couples at a time though!! I'm much better with a few people at a time.
I just hate it when there's so many people around and I can't get to them all, to chat with and make
sure they have what they need!! I, also, feel that I miss out on so much of what is going on that day! LOL

Okay, I'll try and identify the hosta being asked about, hopefully in picture order:

Fourth pic. down, grey/green hosta? If I'm on the same page/pic. you're referring to, 'vhick',
it's 'Carousel', the one with the white margins?? Correct me if I'm not referring to the one you're asking
about!

Deanna, the 4th pic. and the green margined chartreuse in the back (barreled) is my 'Capt. Kirk'
a magnificently vigorous grower for me. It took off and has loved that barrel from the very beginning!

Here's a pic. of it in 2004 after I first planted it--doesn't even look like the same plant
much at all! Now, the margins seem wider to me, I think!

2004

And, by 2005, it had gotten this full, already:

Twilight & Captain K--6-06-05

Starina, the one I think you're referring to is----'Emerald Ruff Cut'!! Right? If you love that one, you'll love 'Journey's End',
a new hosta for me, that is suppose to have even greater size and texture, (along with the ruffles) when it matures!

Shade, I'm not sure I understand, for sure, which hosta pic. you are asking about--could you count them
again, and make sure of the # of the pic.? :O) I'd hate to mislead and mislabel one!!

Again, thank you so much, for making the kind comments about my efforts. I love 'my space'
and my *corner of the world*. I often envy those of you with huge areas to fill with all the hosta
you can get your hands on, and endless possibilities to design a nook here and there, but I do
love what I have and am finding that there may not be an end to my nooks either--because every time
I think it's full, I find a spot where I can inch out the bed a bit more to accommodate some newer
acquisitions!! hehehe The one bed, that I made a notation on about how much it has grown in one
month, has had it's border stones moved 4 x's during that time--really! hahaha I couldn't believe I
was redoing it so often when each time I thought that was going to be the most I could move it and
have ANY grass left. As of now, there's JUST enough room for the lawn tractor to inch through and
make it's way to the front yard!! I only mow the upper back with a push mower now!!

Who needs grass when you have hosta---and stepping stones!! :o)

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Really lovely! As I've said before, I can't wait until mine mature and I get somewhat of the look you have. One more question . . . in the last pic, what is the hosta on left, directly in front of the flower pot with the wide green margins? Thanks!

 o
*Thinking* can be hard work, too!

'Vhick', I've been think, think--thinking---and wonder if maybe you're referring to the taller
vase-shaped hosta in that pic., (more centered) and if so that's my 'Liberty' that just refuses to
do all that well in the previous spot I had it in and in this one--better but not good, IMO!

It started out with two eyes, 4 years ago, and still has ONLY two eyes!!!! I'd really love for
it to do well in that spot, but I purchased another one, and planted it across the stepping stone
path from it (the last pic.) and it's doing better--somewhat!! This is the second summer for that
one, so, hopefully next year it will 'leap'!! :o)

Oops, 'Cindylou'--I missed your posting while posting my own! LOL

That hosta is ('gifted' to me by 'Greenguy') 'Striptease'! I never could get one
to do well and he sent me a portion of his and finally, I have a good one!!

Thank you, again, Todd!!!!!! It's doing great!!!

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Thank you so much, thought maybe, but wasn't sure. Love it, and want Journey's end now too. Consider yourself officially an enabler!

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

That Ice Age Trail is the biggest I've ever seen! What a splendid garden. And it's not that small either. Bigger than mine, for sure.

Thanks for sharing.

Oops, sorry Janice. The blue hosta is on the upper left of the 12th pic, I said the right by mistake.

No problem 'Shade'! That one is my favorite big blue--'Blue Angel'!!! I have a barrel full of them
in my 'secret garden' area and I can't wait till they get as large as that one!!!!

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Janice, You're garden is so marvelous! I am inspired. I am studying your plant combinations. I have many of the same (or did, some haven't survived), but not as many hostas. Still, my garden is a far cry from the splendor of yours! Sometimes, I blame our two rescue dogs who tend to unplant/trample most of what I plant (mom and son gotta chase and dig after those chipmunks, you know!), but I have to admit, I don't really spend enough time out there-combination of arthritis and laziness. I have two weeks of vacation now, so seeing your place couldn't have come at a better time! I will brave the heat and get busy...perhaps in the front, dog-free yard first. Many thanks.

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Oh Janice. Words escape me. Your gardens are so lush and inviting. I only hope that some day my gardens will give me as much peace and tranquility as yours must surely give you. I love ALL of it. Especially the ivy growing up the tree and it looks like over the swing. The way you've laid it out just draws the eye. Just Beautiful.

Can you stand one more request for hosta ID? Third picture from bottom, upper left corner. What is that beauty. Same question for second from the bottom picture, lower right hand corner. Also a beauty.

Good to know about Journey's End. Mine should be here this week. :-)))

What a wonderful yard! The whole yard is a garden, I would LOVE that. It must have taken you years to accomplish this.

RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

A few years ago I read a book, Shade Gardening. I'd swear that some of the pictures in that book were from your garden. I'm so jealous of your Spilt Milk! Well, actually, I'm jealous of the entire garden and the fabulous collection of hosta. You're the only other gardener I know who incorporates tradescantia. Thank you, thank you! Nance

Thank you, 'cyn' (I know what you mean about doggies, laziness and not so much the arthritis, but definitely sore muscles!), 'Christine,
(It only took me 5 years for the most of it--you go girl, the payoff is quicker than you'd think!!), 'Nance' (glad you like the spiderworts--got them
in several areas--hope my 'Spilt Milk' will survive and get as large as my neighbor's)!

And, thank you, Alexis, and about the hosta in pic. three from the bottom--upper left, must be the 'Ice Age Trail', one it took me several years after
the initial buzz about it, to final get one! I just couldn't see what all the excitement was about, looking at the nursery sized ones, but I definitely understand
now! I love it!!! And, I believe you're also referring to the same hosta but a different angle in the second from the bottom pic.! I think you must like it, too!!! :o)

'IAT', is really blue with those creamy stripes and looks very unique, I think, (in my collection) sort of like spilt milk but with more distinct markings!! Mine gets
dappled morning sun at the most!

Again--thank you ALL! You sure know how to make someone feel good about their newbie-efforts!! :o)

RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Janice,
I keep coming back to this thread, I'm in love with Barney! Also, we use the same companion plants. I didn't have any Black Lace sambucus in the garden, until yesterday, I picked a couple up at a good price, after I saw how nice it looks in you garden.
Your compositions are beautiful. You have an innate gift for texture and color use. I just love your garden.

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Thanks for the id on Blue Angel Janice. I should of recognized that one :-) Mine has lost the blueness now but I still like the form of it.
Thanks for posting your pix, helps me to remember why I love hostas. We've had such a horrible rainy season that slugs are making some of mine unphotographable!

Oh, you're welcome, 'shades'!! Anytime!

I really thought you had to have a B.A.!! Your gardens are so beautiful and you have such wonderful
specimens of so many of the ones we all love.

Slugs--ugh!! I know--they do make 'the season' less than stellar--depending on the rain.
The rain sure makes the hosta grow and look so hearty but the slugs sure seem to love the rain,
and then our hosta as dessert!!! Gak!

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Can anyone answer this question for me?

in the original set of pictures - last photo, there is a close up area and there is a bird house with a twiggy wreath around it.

Below that is a clump of flowers, tall stemed, smallish blue flowers.

Can anyone tell me what the name is? I have a clump in my yard and need to move it....any idea?

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

I must say, I will take a walk with you anytime you want to post pics of your spectacular garden! The pooch is adorable too!!,Judy

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Heyj, just gorgeous... looks like it's a great place to relax.... sometimes I wish I had a smaller garden, having as much space as I do can get overwhelming!

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

Your pics are inspiring & a great remembrance of the garden as it changes. After your loss of trees I know you'll make it lovely again.

 o
RE: A rainy day--so you're getting the full-boatload!!

The idea of putting such a large fan on an outside deck in the middle of the yard -- how weird -- I would never think of doing such a crazy thing in NINETY-FIVE +/- DEGREE WEATHER DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY :^)
