Very nice,Kathy! I heard once that hostas would grow in Alaska, but never(until now) saw any pics from up there. The hosta next to the red Astilbe reminds me of Sagae, but seems a little small for that hosta. Welcome to the forum, from North Carolina! Phil

Hi Phil: thanks for commenting. I don't think I've ever lost a hosta in Juneau...and I've planted a lot of them. They must like it here!

Beautiful gardens dahli22. So many wonderful plants to look at. Thanks for posting. Too bad more people haven't taken the time to look at what you have accomplished,or if they have they haven't taken the time to post.

What zone are you in to be able to grow Japanese maples? They can sometimes winter kill in my zone five. I lost part of two of mine last year.

Oh my gosh Kathy, just gorgeous how it all just pops!
I'm not sure what part of Alaska you're in or even if the climate is the same over all of the state. I had a friend years ago who lived in Alaska. She said when the warm weather came the plants were spectacular, everything blooming at once!

RE: Hostas in Juneau Alaska

thanks for the comments! love to hear from other gardeners.

connie: I have lost every Japanese Maple I ever planted except the one in the photo. A nursery owner told me a couple of years ago they're really not hardy here (zone 4) but that one probably survived because it's planted close to our house. wish they didn't sell stuff they know won't survive -- those are expensive here!

shade tolerant: we live in Juneau...climate is pretty mild here but we get A LOT of rain.

Thanks for answering my question. The JM do need shelter. My best one is also near my house.

Cleaned the sidewalk and trimmed shrubs after the picture was taken.

Please make sure you post on the regular forum next time so more can see your wonderful garden.

Luscious Japanese Maple Connie, I love JMs. I'm lucky enough to live in a warmer zone so mine can go through winter out in the open.
