Hosta Giants 2014

Nice cold day to start some categories. I do not grow giants as I tend to say with the small and mediums. Post any giants here and keep it going as we continue the alphabet.

Parhelion was bought as Phil loved his so.

Other categories to include: large, small, medium, minis, golds, blues and a few others.

SAGAE rules in my garden! Pic taken early June with leaves still unfurling in places. (it always brings Phil to mind with a smile..even when he was still alive but my having a handful of the same Hostas will keep him "alive" for me for years to come.)

My montana Aureomarginata a few years ago. It was about 7 feet wide and 3 feet high last year. Swallowing more and more of the landscape.

I am not certain War Paint is classified as giant but mine thinks it is since it was moved to a new location. It is not as large as Myrle's Niagara Falls but is is a want to be look alike spin off

Bressingham Blue is my biggest, reaching six feet across in 2014.

Most leafs are over a foot wide. Bressingham Blue is one of the few of my hosta which has never been moved. This may explain the growth of this big boy which is only 6 or 7 years old.

Some of the big ones from the front bed. Elegans in the front right is five feet across. Others include a three-year-old Satisfaction, Olive Bailey Langdon, Krossa Regal and Sagae.

    Blue Angel and Northern Exposure

Sagae making a comeback following transplant the previous fall.

Giant is relative to where and how you grow. I have a 5 year old Sum and Substance that is only about 4' across, as I'm in the South and it's hot here. They don't get very big.

Then, there's Don_R's giant hosta. Now those are giants!

I'll never think I have a "giant" again.

Thanks Barb, that's very nice of you to say. I wish I'd planted more years ago such as Earth Angel, Northern Exposure, Blue Mammoth (any of the oldies I don't have).

Almosthooked, do you have a picture of your War Paint showing the variegation? Yours is a beauty and if I didn't have Niagara Falls already, I'd get that one or Bridal Falls for sure.

Peren.all, your picture of Winter Snow finally piqued my interest in it. I've been online researching and your picture is the best I've seen. How old is your plant and does it do well in shade? I might have a space for it.

I love the pictures of Sagae and don't have that one yet, not for not trying. The first one I bought expired and the second one that I paid big bucks for turned out to not be Sagae, so I bought one called 'Super Sagae' but I don't know if it's a giant (sorry for the run-on sentence). I'm assuming that a giant is anything listed in the literature as 28 inches tall or over. I still want a Sagae though.

This is what I want my QUEEN OF THE SEA to look like someday. This one belongs to Don Budd.

Well irawon what a nice thing to say. Isn't this alphabet an eye opener?
I have seen hostas here that I had sort of overlooked until now too. A large part of that due to your pics!
Winter Snow is 3 years old. I have been extremely pleased with its growth. It is getting sun until 2:30 - 3:00 in my garden.
In 2013 it was much more gold, our summer was cool in 2014 when this pic was taken.
In deep shade I think it would be chartreuse and the margin might be creamy yellow.
I adore this hosta and believe it would be stunning in any exposure.
Perhaps others will post their pics here or when W comes up. I hope so!

Peren.all, you've made me happy to know that Winter Snow has grown so beautifully in only three years. I'll try to find a sunnier spot. I'm hesitant to add new giants at my age because they take so long to mature.
