Transplanting Hostas

I have a farm in South Dakota. I also have a home in Washington DC. I need to dig up some Hostas now in DC that I won't be able to replant in SD until spring. Can I leave them in a cool place in DC or SD until spring, or should I replant them now at a friends house in DC and move them to SD this spring when the ground thaws? Thanks.

if they will stay dormant .. no need to plant them ...

if they will come out of dormancy before spring in SD ... then plant them with the friend .. and have them mail them to you after the last chance of frost freeze in SD
