Hosta Alphabet R - Winter 2012

OK, Paul. I'll start.

Royal Flush. Saw this one in almost every convention garden last summer.

Rascal, named after Alex Summers' dog

Rainforest Sunrise. I think everyone has this now.

Rhino Hide, finally got one late last year. Don, can you show us the original clump?

Rare Breed

Red Sox, kind of dirty, but we love that Dirty Water

I cannot forecast the actions of a Hostaholic. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. That key is insanity.
    - long lost quotation of Winston Churchill

Roller Coaster Ride, a sport of Ray of Hope - 2nd year

Rosedale Misty Pathways - 1st year

Roy Klehm, a sport of Summer Serenade - 3rd year, nice inner leaf pattern

This one is starting to look good, I hope the leaves get a little bigger this year.

Love the dark green color on this one

Also bought as a tissue culture but grew well last year

Love this hosta and can't wait for it to get bigger

Looking forward to seeing this one this year

Put on some good growth last year

    Really love this one.

A little story on this one. I had Royal Flush and it began to turn yellow which I liked. It is a strong, bright yellow. I removed the eyes (1/2 the plant) and called it Ra. The original Ra was in a pot and died in my awful year of 2009. Meanwhile the mother plant kept turning yellow. I've left it and called it Ra. That is the plant below. Two years ago I did buy another Royal Flush which is growing but in too much shade so it will be moved this year.

This has been one of the best golds I've gotten in the last few years. I'm hoping to move my old August Moon to the woods and replace it with this which is brighter.

Second year, love the orangie margin.

'Raspberry Sorbet' has a nice enough form in and of itself -reminiscent of 'Invincible'- but I truly LOVE its flowers.

'Raspberry Sorbet' flowers, one of my favourites!

Another favourite is 'Ray of Hope', both because of the form as well as the flowers.

    'Ray of Hope' flower.

    'Red October'

'Revolution' has a penchant for sporting to green, I call those sports Green Revolution.

Fresh out of Don R's garden -- Rhino Blue.

I really don't have any good pics of Rhino Hide except for those posted on the Hosta Library. Here is one clump that is growing next to my house. The leaves will eventually get very round, cupped, and heavily puckered at maturity.

The pic that Gesila posted is the all-blue sport of Rhino Hide, which is Rhino Blue. It was tested by Zonneveld who determined it to be fully tetraploid (4-4-4). Rhino Blue is a hybridizer's dream for creating new hostas with remarkable substance.
