Another question about seed

I am also sitting in yet another snow storm...but I did save one pod of seed from this summer. However I am wondering how long does it take for a little hosta to sprout? I planted them about a week ago. Nothing so far :(

7 to 14 days ... if viable.. with some heat at night... you cant have soil temps that fluctuate 20 degrees overnight.. for speedy germination ... try the top of the fridge ... ken

I germinated seed this winter and the earliest germination was 24 days and at 38 days there are still seeds germinating. They are in the basement where the temp is low 60's.Ken's idea using fridgetop might be way to speed things up if it is feasible. At my house the male cat would push them onto the floor for taking his perch.Phil

Top of fridge is common for warming, but it can also dry things out quickly and often. Note that there are seedling sprouting tray heaters available at garden centers, though a little pricey. Our sprouting shelves are surrounded by 'space blanket' type material, and aluminum foil, and that keeps the light and heat from the light fixtures in. HTH. hh

Has anyone used peat pods for hosta seeds

I've used the small square peat pots to start lotus seeds. (Yes, you can start lotus from seed in spite of what you read that says you can't.) I think the only advantage of the peat pots is that you can set them right in the ground with the seedlings growing in them and the pot will eventually decompose. If you plan to take the seedlings out, then go with the plastic cells which won't get soggy like the peat. Plus you can re-use the plastic ones if you wash them out thoroughly. |

I just planted some more seeds last week. Nothing yet. It took about 3 weeks plus for the last batch. Slp, I hear that the hosta seeds will come up in the peat pots, but sometimes the roots inside just go round and round and when they are finally planted it takes a while for them to break through and straighten themselves out. I have never tried it myself.
