Moving Hostas

I need a little help from all you experts out there...Do I set a hosta back a cycle or two on the sleep, creep, leap schedual if I move them?

I think it depends on how and when you move them. Least effect would be to move in early spring with a large as possible root ball, followed by a good soaking and a light fertilizing. Most of the growth is in the spring/early summer and so you should be ahead of that spurt of growth.

Any other opinions?

do the job poorly and cut off all the roots.. aka.. stored energy ... set back

do it in july or august... set back ... when it is supposed to be storing energy for next year ... set back

do it either in early spring.. or late fall ... big root ball.. no root injury .... as soon as the ground thaws.. 6 to 8 weeks before they emerge... no problem ... or in fall once they yellow .... after they are done storing energy ... no problem

The hosta in the pictures below were moved early last spring. The pictures were taken last summer. In all cases, the hosta were bigger than the previous season. As Ken says above: right time and big rootball!
