I've enjoyed the photos that you've been posting- hard to imagine we'll have green plants soon after dealing with 2' of snow and frigid temps. I just have a few questions -do you water your hostas in the woods? What kind of sunlight do most of them get? And lastly, I see you use black embossed labels (I think that's a Dymo labeler). Do they last well?

| We too get 2+ foot of snow and sub-zero weather. Hosta are definite water lovers, yes we water and often wish we could double what we lay down. Now understand the soil here is way light and drainage is beyond good. If we get an inch or more in a week, all's O.K. but two is better. H. 'Abba Dabba Do' is a great example of a water lover. You really have to drench it real often to get it to stand up tall and perky. Most of the hosta are in almost complete shade, say, heavily mottled. Now, after years, we see that Hosta are NOT shade plants, merely shade tolerant. We have several examples of the same cultivar in deep shade vs. one in more reasonable light, and the growth difference is obvious. Finally, yes, the plain old dymo embossed labels last and last, at least in the shade. It's a pressure-activated adhesive, so press hard when applying. It takes a sharp pocket knife (and a steady hand) to get one back off after 10 years, I can tell you! Hope I got all that and didn't go too far. hh |

Thanks for the answers. I have a pretty woodland area that is almost all shade and the soil gets very dry from the thirsty trees. Luckily I live right by a lake so I give that garden at least 1-1/2" a week. I tried the Brothers P-touch labeler and the ink faded in one year. I later found out the tape was for indoor use!! Now I engrave on the alum markers and highlight the letters with a Painty pen. Peggy |

Peggy, Oh, that we had a 'surface water' source, we'd water 24/7 in season! Here on a glacial moraine, the water is an astounding 426' down, and the pump big and bad enough to bring up the water that far really spins the electric meter, yeouch! So we skinny by as needed, and love when we get lotsa rain. hh |

| I am new to the Hosta forum and have acquired much new knowledge and inspiration from you and other seasoned hosta gardeners. It would also help to know where you are geographically and your gardening zone? Thanks for sharing so much from your garden, and I loved the cats and other animals, too. FYI, photos of our garden are on our farm web page, and we are in SW WA State in the Columbia River Gorge. |
