| I'd like to get some interesting seedlings. Which breeders would you recommend? I'm considering Beatrice, Galaxy, Dorothy Benedict, William Lachman, and Pin Stripe Sister.

Hi Deanna, I think it largely depends upon your personal hybridizing goals. Choose plants which exhibit the characteristics you find appealing. Of course, you should select a streaked pod parent if you wish to have variegated seedlings. However, there are many beautiful hostas that aren't variegated. There is a good article by Bill Meyer titled, "A Primer on the Traits of Hosta Species" which is posted here. The author gives some good information about what hostas species to use for very characteristics you may want to be evident in your seedlings. If you're looking for a source for streaked breeders, there is a website titled Streaked Hostas.com. I have never ordered from them, but they appear to have many streaked cultivars available. Other sources include suppliers with extensive inventories, such as Jim's Hostas. |
