Well, you have to consider your zone. My Wal-Mart never puts out potted plants this time of year. Sometimes,bare-root ones will appear pretty soon;the only trouble is,you can't plant them this time of year up here. BTW,what is that hosta? Phil (A former Floridian)

What is it? The famous Hosta Sun noid. I'm in Florida and plants are starting to come in early. Bare root and bagged ones like cannas and bulbs are in. Time for me to get the beds ready. Paula

I see a blue tag. Didn't it have a name on it? At $4.00 it's not one of the more expensive ones. Looks to me like Francee. Steve

There is a tag but it is generic and just ids the plant as a hosta. The white one just gives the sku etc. Here is a photo I took earlier.

Be careful of those big box store hostas. They don't care if they sell HVX infected hostas or not.

There's a hosta in the Dallas Arboretum trial garden that does very well, and if I remember, it's called Sun Hosta. (It kind of looked like So Sweet to me - the leaves are longer and the margins are wider than Francee, plus the green is a little lighter - like So Sweet) The hosta library doesn't have a Sun hosta, as I looked it up last fall. I'll look in my photos and notes and see if I can find a photo and a grower as the major growers provide the hosta for the trial garden . bkay

I would begin to question the Dallas Arboretum procurer of hostas. Perhaps they should be growing actually registered hostas, or are they just do a "what's available locally" sort of thing? I would expect an arboretum to do a bit more research into what they are buying and testing. Do they know about the AHS? Registered hostas? Bkay, you probably know more about hostas than they do!!!!! -Babka

| I found the photo. If you can see the tag, it's from grolink. Of all the hosta there, this is the only one I could not find at the hosta library. It was a great looking hosta, though. Keep in mind this is after 50-something days above 100 and no rain for at least 3 months. I was impressed with it's looks given the weather. I find myself unable to criticize the arboretum (and I criticize everyone), as they don't choose the varieties they grow. The major growers/wholesalers provide them. The ones that do well stay and the ones that don't get chunked. I believe they called it an ongoing trial. They add new ones every year. I still think it looks like So Sweet. The So Sweet photo was taken in the spring, so the leaves are a little lighter. However, with phtos side by side, they are very similar. The So Sweet leaves seem a little wider and more heart shaped though. I think it will be a great hosta for Florida. bkay Sun hosta

Wow bkay good eye. I put the photos next to each other and it is a dead ringer. I guess the Sun hosta did good in trials. It will be interesting to see how it does all summer. Thank you all for your time and good growing. Paula
