Anyone ordered from them? What did you think about the hostas you received?

Not much recent feedback on Garden Watchdog.

I have ordered from them for the last two years. They have a huge selection and hostas I couldn't get elsewhere. Some of them were pretty small but they were all healthy, strong plants. I didn't order this year as I my hosta budget is on a diet and I am cutting back (haha) but I will probably order again next year.

My first order with them was last year.
First, lemme say, I odered from Hallsons, Naylor, Glenbrook Farms, In the Country, Jim's and one other--can't think of it right now.

Jim's sent good size plants, however, they were the most stressed of all the shippers. It appeared that the plants had been recently divided (not field grown divisions) and had wilted from having been prepared for shipping far to prematurely.

The plants did revive, but they needed to be soaked for a couple days and remain taped vertical and supported for several weeks in order to get them to stand on their own.

I would order from them again, but not if I could get what I wanted from somewhere else.

My experience was essentially the same as Melissa's. I have ordered from them again this year because they had a plant I wanted, but I will be sure to soak the plants upon arrival and support them.

Because he tends to be on the expensive side I usually look elsewhere first, but a lot of times he has hostas that no one else has. I have never lost a hosta I received from him, and they plants are always healthy, though sometimes smaller then others would have sent.

What do you mean by "taped vertical"?

They were the only one who had the hosta I wanted, in stock, so I ordered it. I would order again in the same circumstances. It was August or September when I got it, but you can judge for yourself. Hosta is Venus. This is how it looked when it arrived. They sent a bonus plant, but it was so little, I didn't even plant it.

Oh, Wow! Now I remember the exact circumstances. I told them to hold off shipping as we had another hot week coming up. They didn't. When the hosta arrived, it was about 110 degrees. The bonus plant was completely wilted and I didn't even bother. I posted on here asking what I should do. Not only was if fried, it looked like this.

It would have to be something I could not get anywhere else for me to buy from them.

The more I'm reading, the more apprehensive I'm getting. I ordered Jade Cascade, Navajo, and Frisian Pride from him. Maybe I should cancel...

Taped vertical: masking tape around the petioles to hold the plant completely vertical until the plant regains strength and wilt under its own weight.

Here's a picture of my shipment from Jim's last year. Plants were small, but all were hard to find ones and pretty new to market.

These are really small pots, I think 6" x 6". Most of them outgrew their pots by the first of August.

Strawberry Banana Smoothie never recovered, I'm hoping it was busy sending down roots.

If I there is a hosta that I've determined I "have to have", and Jim's is the only place I can find it, I will order from him again.

I ordered from Jim's for the first time last year and was very happy with the size and quality of the plants I recieved!
I would and did order from him again,I feel his prices are fair for the size and quality of the plants he ships!
I would suggest giving him a try,one or two plants for the first time. (Maybe!)

I think he is overpriced.. Buy only if you can't find anywhere else. The plants I received were all single-eyed.

RE: Jim's Hostas

I have ordered several times and until the last order I found them satisfactory. The last time I ordered two streaked plants at $45 each and single eyes were fine but they were barely streaked. They did not maintain what little streaking they had. The all blue reversions took over before I could get a decent streaked eye off them. He does have many that you cannot find elsewhere and as long as they were not streaked I might order again.
