Can't say I have this variety but it appears to be a Garter snake :)

Plain old garter snake. Harmless, and they love to eat small frogs, slugs, grasshoppers etc. I have a couple that stay in my garden and I live in the middle of a small town.

Yup, a cute little Garter Snake. A friend of the garden. Like Gary said, harmless. They frequent my gardens every spring/summer as well. I'm not afraid of snakes, but they never fail to startle the hell outta me every year. : )

Garter snake? Is it harmful? Who can tell me how to make friends with it? ahaha...

RE: I.D. please?

It looks to be an Eastern garter snake. Very common species, harmless to humans. They eat bugs, small fish, tadpoles, stuff like that. Good pest control. Must be getting warm up around where you live. They den up in great numbers over the winter. When it's spring, they come out of the den to seek food.

I saw one having a big bump in the middle, perhaps had eaten a mouse, thanked it for protecting my garden.

Oh Esther, I only wish I could see one right now. No, this is a stock photo found on the internet. My snakes, if any, are still wearing their woollies and buried under 3 feet of snow.

Hostanista,

I am actually glad NOT to be seeing any garter snakes. If you disturb them, they will musk all over you, shooting noxious smelling musky oil out of their cloaca onto you (or whoever disturbs them). There are enough stray cats to handle any rodentos around here. I just saw 2 beautiful solid deep grey cats in the courtyard down the street. They haven't been around here before. I think the poor things were dumped. Hope someone takes them in.
