A surprise between the roots...

I wanted to ask your opinions on this one...

I noticed before Stand By Me leafed out, there was what I took for a seedling sticking out between it's roots. At that point, Stand By Me was just showing pips. The tops of the roots were sitting just above the ground and this little guy was growing up right between them. I was keeping a very close eye on everything at that time and I know that there were no pips involved with this little guy, he just suddenly appeared with a single hosta leaf sticking up. I very gently pulled and he slid right out of the ground with a single long root (it had been raining), so I moved him over to a space of his own and he now has three leaves.

My question is this: Do you think this is a seedling, or just a part of Stand By Me? Note that I am 100% sure it was not attached to the mother plant in any way. Here are pics:
