I wouldn't risk it with a hosta you care about. I have made a lot of hypertufa pots and have left hostas in there over the winter and some have lived, some have died. What I try to do now is plant my potted hostas in nursery liner pots and slip those into the nice containers. Then I lift the nursery pots at the end of the season and bury them. I am a zone colder than you, though...not sure if that makes a difference.

the issue is the accumulation of too much water.. when its too cold ...

the plant doesnt need it.. or cant use it ... and some of them will root rot ...

and that is why.. come november or so.. we let them dry out to some extent.. and tip them on their side... just to keep rain and melting snow out ..

obviously you cant do that with this monstrosity ... so figure out how to cover it ... perhaps just a cardboard box from the grocer... something that will breath.. but stop water ... NOT PLASTIC ... no garbage bag.. etc ....

the better idea would probably be a pot-in-pot system ... so in november... you can just lift the hosta and pot out.. and store properly .. hit a recycle bin at a nursery..a and get one that comes pretty close ...

the last alternative.. is to unpot the hosta.. heal it in the veggie garden.. and repot come march/april.. while it is still dormant ...

regardless.. nothing is worth a herniated disc.. so dont go fooling around with that cement thing....

'Seducer' has been safely planted in ground in a back bed and some annuals planted in the urn. Low maintenance has become my mantra as of late.
